I was asked this recently, and I realized I couldn’t remember the last time I laughed so freely that I simply surrendered to the moment.

We are living through unusual times. Our social circles often shrink to studies, work, sports, religious commitments — and the cycle repeats. Turning on the television — for those who still do — means constant exposure to conflict, crises, and excess. Social media keeps us immersed in endless stimulation and instant rewards. Everything feels unstable, echoing what Zygmunt Bauman described as the liquidity of modern life.

This reflection isn’t about listing problems, but about understanding how our environment shapes us. Are we laughing less because we’re surrounded by heavier narratives? Look around: colors have faded, designs have become uniform, expressions more restrained. If laughter feels rare, what is our environment trying to tell us? How much of our emotional fatigue comes from overconnection and constant stimulation?

Perhaps it’s time to return to the essential — to what is human. What truly makes you feel well? I’m reminded of a question Steve Jobs reportedly asked himself each morning: if I do today what I’m about to do, will it make me happy? He believed that answering “no” for many consecutive days was a warning sign.

Not everyone can change immediately. But everyone can plan when to change. Some need years to build stability and breathe more freely. Others must climb steep steps just to reach the basics. And some simply need someone willing to listen, so they can regain strength.

I don’t know when you’ll read this, but know this: you’re not alone.

Today, I want to talk about complete change. You might think — and I partially agree — that change has always been a theme in this space. Still, it’s worth naming a specific kind of transformation: deep and intentional change.

Let’s try a simple exercise.
Pause for a moment and reflect on what no longer makes sense in your life. Do you have control over it? If you choose to change direction, what would the consequences be? Is there a parallel plan that allows stability while things realign? This kind of movement has a name: pivoting.

Pivoting means changing direction while preserving what you’ve already built. The word comes from pivot, implying rotation around a fixed point — not starting over, but repositioning with clarity.

Data S2 was initially conceived as a software company. Over time, reflection revealed its true nature as an independent research lab. On a personal level, I experienced something similar. For a while, I felt limited in how I could contribute to my community. With time and reflection, I realized I could serve in different ways — supporting immigrant communities and connecting people through languages and shared experiences. It was something I had always wanted to do, but it required courage to act on it. In short, it required pivoting.

Don’t be afraid to change direction. The greater risk lies in repeating the same actions and expecting outcomes that no longer align with who you are. Life moves quickly, and it’s too short to be lived in the shadow of “what if.” Choose instead the kind of actions that make you feel truly alive.

There’s a phrase in front of where I write that captures this perfectly: may death find you fully alive.

We’ve been quiet for almost a month, but there are good reasons for that. Some are practical, others simply honest excuses — all part of the process. In this first conversation of 2026, I’d like to look back on 2025 and share a few guiding directions for the year ahead.

In 2025, I opened several paths at once. That dispersion was visible at times, but it served an important purpose: it helped me understand more clearly what I do not want for my life. Not every open door needs to be walked through.

As I entered my thirties, I realized that the years dedicated to Data S2 were, above all, a powerful learning journey. Not every goal was reached as initially imagined, but the experience taught me discipline, resilience, and clarity. Sustaining products over many years with responsibility and focus offered lessons that go far beyond numbers.

In 2024, Data S2 went through a significant structural transition. By 2025, this evolution matured into what I called The Year of the Phoenix — a time to reassess identity, culture, and direction. Data S2 continues into 2026 as an independent research lab focused on data, particularly within the financial and banking sectors. Our aim is to create impact through accessible knowledge, with weekly articles and thoughtful analysis.

2025 was also a year of experimentation. One such experience was 3HG Discounts, a practical exploration of affiliate marketing. While the project reached significant visibility, it reinforced an important lesson: some models require specific scale, capital, and timing to become sustainable. It was a valuable learning experience.

The decision to pursue an exchange program in New Zealand led to the creation of Auckland Today. What began as a newsletter evolved into a personal knowledge base — a place to document research, preparation, and reflections on living abroad. It’s not a commercial project, but a space for learning and sharing.

Finally, this space. In 2025, I published my first books — one in Portuguese (Enquanto a banda tocar) and another in English (2025: The Year of the Phoenix). In 2026, I plan to continue writing, especially in English, with new projects already taking shape.

augsmachado.com remains a space for reflection, emotional safety, and quiet construction. Much of this writing happens in silence, but every reader who walks alongside this journey gives it meaning. Circuit Zero

Circuit Zero is the space of self-perception — the consecrated object is ourselves.
It’s the realm of the alter ego, where self-praise carries little weight because we are both the creator and the critic. It’s where we see our progress but also where we face the pressure of what hasn’t yet worked.

I’ve been publishing on LinkedIn since 2018 — the same year I founded Data S2. It took five years to earn recognition: in 2023, I was named a Global LinkedIn Top Voice under 30 — a Portuguese writer who generated measurable business impact and whose ideas were worth following. Writing has always been a way to express what I feel, even when, in Circuit Zero, I doubted my own words.

Circuit One

Circuit One belongs to those who believe in us when we no longer do — the circuit of roots.

They’re the ones who comfort us, who buy our first product, who whisper: “Keep going.”

At Data S2, we provided free eBay data collection services for seven years — serving over 2,300 users and handling millions of monthly requests with sub-second latency. But last year, my team disbanded, and I faced a question: stop or continue?

I chose to return to my roots. Data S2 remains a data company, but with a renewed vision — focused on APIs, automation, machine learning, and quantum computing. The faces have changed, but the essence endures. I continue the journey — grateful to those who once shared it with me.

Circuit Two

In this entrepreneurial journey I’ve chosen — and one I hope you’ll embark on too — there comes a stage that tests us deeply: the breaking zone. Let me explain.

In open-water swimming, there are critical moments — each carrying its risks. If you want to get to deeper waters quickly, you catch a rip current. But if you want a smoother swim or sail, you need to move past the area where the waves form. That region, right between the shore and the open sea, is called the breaking zone. It’s the most difficult part: the wind and waves push you backward while you fight to move forward.

Life works much the same way. Sometimes, it’s easier to turn back — but progress only comes to those who keep swimming. Returning to shore may feel safe, but you’ll eventually need to face the sea again.

And yet, there’s wisdom in stepping back. If you return better equipped and with the right technique, you increase your chances of breaking through. The same applies in business: success is uncertain, so it’s wise to keep small projects running in parallel — but also to recognize when it’s time to rebuild or let one go.

A speedboat will always move faster than your arms, but if you don’t have one yet, learn how to build your raft. In entrepreneurship, the principle is simple: you don’t need to create something worth a million dollars — you just need something that can be sold a million times.

The breaking zone is exhausting; it feels like everything is pulling you back. But hold your focus. Stay consistent. Refine your technique. Soon, that turbulent stretch will fade behind you — and the open sea will be yours.

For a long time, I didn’t realize how short life truly is. But it’s not just short — it’s unpredictable. You can share a cup of coffee with a friend today, and minutes later, they might be gone. You can argue with your parents about a party you’re not allowed to attend, sneak out anyway, and during the party, receive a call that changes everything.
